Alongside new drawings by Shuvinai Ashoona, we are thrilled to present work by another cutting-edge woman artist, Maudie Okittuq. Based in Talurjuaq (Taloyoak), Okittuq began carving in the late-1960s and has enjoyed an over fifty-year-long artistic career creating remarkable sculpture primarily out of stone. The transformations, shamans, and spirit figures in this delightful selection of work highlights not only Okittuq’s extraordinarily unique vision, but also her exceptional ability to translate the spirit world into stone.

Exhibition: Textiles by Annie Taipana

Alongside Maudie Okittuq’s fantastical sculptures, we are pleased to introduce a new series of wall-hangings by textile artist, Annie Taipana. Taipana’s distinctive wall-hangings are defined by whirlwind compositions of arctic animals, executed in brightly coloured applique and intricately layered stitchwork. Originally from Qamani’tuaq, Taipana now resides in Rankin Inlet where she continues her artistic practice.

Exhibition: Shuvinai Ashoona

This mini-show of recent drawings by award-winning Kinngait artist Shuvinai Ashoona will feature recent large and medium-scale works by the artist. Ashoona’s recent works take an exciting turn that combines past styles with new subject matter and an extraordinary vibrant colour palette enhanced by the medium of pastel. This show will run in conjunction with Ashoona’s major solo exhibition opening at the Art Gallery of Ontario in 2021, Shuvinai Ashoona: Beyond the Visible.

Exhibition: Life by the River – William Noah (1943-2020)

Graphic artist William Noah led a prolific art career that lasted nearly five decades. Working in the media of acrylic paint and coloured pencil, Noah was best-known for depicting scenes of his community of Qamani’tuaq. Today, in addition to his renown as an artist, Noah’s legacy lives on as a prominent member of his community. This retrospective exhibition is the first since Noah’s passing in 2020, and will feature a selection of never-before-seen works by the artist.

Coming this spring: the much-anticipated solo exhibition for Kinngait artist, Johnny Pootoogook. Pootoogook turned heads with his large-scale Raven drawings at Art Toronto in 2019.
