2019 Venice Biennale: Isuma Collective

Igloolik-based film and multimedia art collective Isuma (Paul Apak Angilirq, Norman Cohn, Zacharias Kunuk, Pauloosie Qulitalik) is representing Canada at the 2019 Venice Biennale. Their video installation showcases feature-length films and livestreams that give international audiences a look into life across Inuit Nunangat. Isuma is the first-ever Inuit art collective to be featured in the historic Canada Pavilion.

In Inuktitut, the hamlet of Baker Lake is called Qamani'tuaq—“where the river widens.” Known as one of the most artistic communities in the Canadian arctic, Baker Lake is also one of the most geographically interesting: it is the North’s sole inland community with one of the harshest climates in North America.
