In 2019, Kinngait artist Shuvinai Ashoona created a special suite of large-scale, hand-coloured etchings printed by Montreal printmaker, Paul Machnik. The result: four sets of otherworldly prints like nothing seen before. These mind-bending works—each one uniquely hand-painted by the artist herself—blur the line between printmaking and painting by bringing together the best of both worlds. This suite marks not only Ashoona’s first major foray into the medium of watercolour, but also the first time that she has hand-coloured etchings herself, a technique usually done by Studio PM in Montreal. While hand-coloured etchings from the past have typically kept colouring within the borders of the image or plate, Ashoona has painted beyond the confines of the printed image to create something entirely new.
