COMPOSITION (POLAR BEAR IN ICE FLOE), Ningiukulu Teevee, Cape Dorset 2009, coloured pencil & ink, 22 x 30 in.
This has been a very productive year for Ningeokuluk Teevee. She expanded her creative pursuits, writing and illustrating her first children’s book, Alego. This is a beautiful story that invites readers to join Alego, a young Inuit girl, on her adventures. This publication is already receiving praise and Teevee is nominated for the 2009 Governor General’s Literary award in the category of Children’s Literature – Illustration. Along with this achievement, Feheley Fine Arts will be hosting Teevee’s second solo exhibition.
Teevee’s meticulous attention to detail is once again prevalent in this stunning group of new drawings. She has a unique ability to make fine lines translate into confident images, that at times appear to take on a life of their own. The juxtaposition of the drawings in this solo exhibition with her illustrations in Alego, demonstrates Teevee’s continued artistic growth as she continues to cultivate her craft and have the confidence to experiment creatively. Teevee’s playful nature and versatility as an artist is apparent in both the exhibition and her new publication.
Nigeokuluk Teevee was born in 1963 and is the daughter of Joanasie and Kanajauk Salomonie. She is married to musician Simeonie Teevee. Teevee made her artistic debut in the 2004 Cape Dorset Annual Print Release and has been prominently featured since. Teevee’s first solo exhibition Original Drawings by Ningeokuluk Teevee was held at Feheley Fine Arts in 2006.
