In Inuktitut, the hamlet of Baker Lake is called Qamani'tuaq—“where the river widens.” Known as one of the most artistic communities in the Canadian arctic, Baker Lake is also one of the most geographically interesting: it is the North’s sole inland community with one of the harshest climates in North America. Online Exhibition: Light Over the Horizon

With a 30-year-long practice under his belt, Qavavau Manumie is a senior artist and master printer at Kinngait Studios. Most recently featured at the Toronto Biennial and at the Feheley Fine Arts booth at Art Toronto, Manumie’s drawings are delightfully idiosyncratic. Straddling the illustrative and the abstract, Manumie uses satirical wit and a draftsman-like precision to reflect on some of the most pressing issues of our time.

In 2019, Kinngait artist Shuvinai Ashoona created a special suite of large-scale, hand-coloured etchings printed by Montreal printmaker, Paul Machnik. The result: four sets of otherworldly prints like nothing seen before.
