WHALE HUNTER, 2013, whalebone, baleen, sinew & stone, 5 x 12 x 5 in.

Born in Coral Harbour in 1972, Daniel Shimout has been carving since his teenage years, following in the footsteps of his artist father and brothers. Shimout strives to take risks and create variety in his art. This is accomplished by incorporating multiple forms of media into his works, including whalebone, ivory, antler, and stone, some of which he has found while on his hunting trips.

Daniel Shimout is at a significant transitional point in his artistic career as he moves away from portraying modern life and embraces a more abstract and spiritual subject matter. His most recent focus revolves around Inuit legends and traditional ways of life, but it is his unique fusion of realism and fantasy that creates original and extraordinary sculpture. He says that he has received much of his inspiration from stories told by his late grandfather and the elders in the area. Shimout’s love of history and Inuit tales combined with his immense imagination and attention to detail create a truly individual collection of works.
