I REMEMBER, 2009, Kinngait (Cape Dorset), coloured pencil & ink, 49 x 75 in.
For many years, we have come to expect beautiful, lyrical compositions from Ohotaq Mikkigak. As an artist, Ohotaq has completed hundreds of drawings in a realistic style that is informed by his knowledge of the land and his experience of living in Cape Dorset. These endearing drawings have a strong design sense, usually feature birds and people, and have often become prints in the annual print release.
Another stream of his work explores the fantastic through compositions of transformations. These blend recognizable shapes into playful compositions and dazzling combinations of line, colour and movement. Ulu Figure is a balancing act of kudliks, knives and fish, while Four Figures shows a group of people around a large skin drum. Their circular stance and Ohotaq’s black outline on white background recall the arctic dwelling of an igloo.
Most recently, following the latest initiative of the Cape Dorset drawing studio, Ohotaq has taken to creating large-scale works on paper. He delved into the new format with enthusiasm, and the results are breathtaking. The scale and the comprehensive application of media have released a fountain of narrative that communicates a substantial message: it is of utmost importance to pass the knowledge of the land to future generations. I Remember depicts the artist’s experience of seeing caribou for the first time, Cape Dorset Houses features some of the most recognizable buildings in the community, and Caribou on the Land shows a herd grazing on lichen in a great arctic valley. In each graphic composition, the artist works to the edges of the paper, filling every available surface with colour and detail. These powerful images remind us of Ohotaq’s ability to push the boundaries of new artistic challenges despite the number of years he has spent in the drawing studio.
