DESCRIPTION:Kinngait-based artist Papiara Tukiki (b. 1942) began drawing images of animals\, transformations\, and spirit-like creatures in the late 1950s. These early years laid the groundwork for her distinctive style and curious subject matter\, imbued with endless wit and whimsy. This exhibition of drawings pays tribute to Tukiki’s creativity and longevity as an elder artist\, and is her second solo exhibition of drawings at Feheley Fine Arts.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for a talk with artist Darcie Bernhardt in conjunction with the exhibition Darcie Bernhardt: Akisuktuaq\, on view from June 5 – 26th at Feheley Fine Arts. Bernhardt\, streaming live from their studio in Halifax\, will speak about their practice and works on view in the exhibition.  \nBernhardt is an Inuvialuk/Gwich’in artist raised in Tuktuyaaqtuuq\, NWT\, where the ocean’s harsh winds carve into the Western Arctic landscape. Currently based in Halifax\, NS\, they are a graduate of NSCADU (BFA\, 2019)\, and was awarded the Indigenous Artist Recognition Award from Arts Nova Scotia in 2020. Bernhardt was the Inuit Art Foundation’s highlighted artist at Art Toronto 2019\, and is featured in RBC’s Emerging Artist Project. Their work and writing have been included several times in the Inuit Art Quarterly. SUMMARY:Exhibition: Life by the River - William Noah (1943-2020)
DESCRIPTION:Graphic artist William Noah led a prolific art career that lasted nearly five decades. Working in the media of acrylic paint and coloured pencil\, Noah was best-known for depicting scenes of his community of Qamani’tuaq. Today\, in addition to his renown as an artist\, Noah’s legacy lives on as a prominent member of his community. This retrospective exhibition is the first since Noah’s passing in 2020\, and will feature a selection of never-before-seen works by the artist.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Shuvinai Ashoona Hand-coloured Etchings
DESCRIPTION:In 2019\, Kinngait artist Shuvinai Ashoona created a special suite of large-scale\, hand-coloured etchings printed by Montreal printmaker\, Paul Machnik. The result: four sets of otherworldly prints like nothing seen before. These mind-bending works—each one uniquely hand-painted by the artist herself—blur the line between printmaking and painting by bringing together the best of both worlds. This suite marks not only Ashoona’s first major foray into the medium of watercolour\, but also the first time that she has hand-coloured etchings herself\, a technique usually done by Studio PM in Montreal. While hand-coloured etchings from the past have typically kept colouring within the borders of the image or plate\, Ashoona has painted beyond the confines of the printed image to create something entirely new.
