SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Old Ways - A Conversation between Father and Son
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition of intimate drawings by renowned Inuit artist Kananginak Pootoogook and his son Johnny Pootoogook showcases scenes from traditional Inuit life. These charming drawings date from the 1990’s and early 2000’s\, at a time when Johnny was observing and learning from his father. Vividly capturing daily life\, the works depict hunting\, games\, traditional clothing\, tools\, and striking depictions of Arctic wildlife including a wonderfully expressive\, disgruntled polar bear. Each drawing offers a miniature yet detailed snapshot of traditional Inuit culture. Long unseen\, this collection is as captivating as it is educational.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Felt - Textiles from Nunavut
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce our latest exhibition\, Felt – Textiles from Nunavut is now open at Feheley Fine Arts. \nShowcasing 18 works in felt\, embroidery\, and beadwork\, this exhibition celebrates the remarkable skill and creativity of women textile artists across Nunavut. The pioneering women who first defined the art of wall hangings often had little to no formal training\, instead learning from one another. Artists often invented techniques as needed and even developed recognizable “signature” stitches that became uniquely their own. Each artist has developed a distinctive voice\, not only in subject matter and composition\, but in the very stitches that shape the work.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Saimaiyu Akesuk
DESCRIPTION:We are excited to announce the upcoming solo exhibition of celebrated graphic artist\, Saimaiyu Akesuk (b. 1988). Known for her incredibly unique artistic style\, Akesuk has been a prominent member of the artistic community since she first began working at Kinngait Studios. Her bold prints and distinctive drawing technique make her works stand out from the themes typically found in Inuit art. Akesuk’s choice of scale\, colour\, and composition turn a simple subject into a playful portrayal. She applies her colours forcefully\, often switching directions of her coloured pencil to create opposing shading. This unique technique produces the striking texture that is visible in Akesuk’s drawings. This 2025 collection of drawings illuminates both the inner workings of Akesuk’s world\, and the inner lives of her animal subjects.

SUMMARY:Online Exhibition: The Incised Line - Kinngait from 1962 - 1965
DESCRIPTION:Introduced to the Kinngait printmaking studios in the early 1960s\, the techniques of etching and engraving opened up new creative pathways for Inuit artists. They produced works in striking detail\, offering the artist a unique opportunity to work directly on the metal printing plate. This exhibition brings together some of the earliest and most exceptional pieces from that formative period\, featuring rare prints that reveal the early stages of a printmaking technique still used by artists today.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Sedna - The Sea Goddess
DESCRIPTION:We are pleased to announce the unveiling of our upcoming exhibition\, “Sedna the Sea Goddess” opening July 3rd 2025. Sedna\, the mythical ‘goddess of the sea’ is frequently depicted in Inuit art across the Arctic. Part human and part fish\, the otherwordly sea spirit oversees the sea and all its inhabitants. Much like the ancient tales that transformed over time into a tapestry of rich and imaginative variations\, contemporary depictions of her are vibrant\, diverse\, and deeply creative. Showcasing both works on paper and sculpture\, this collection highlights the unique and diverse portrayals of Sedna across Inuit art.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Private Series - The AvRutick Collection
DESCRIPTION:Opening Saturday\, June 14th\, we are thrilled to present the newest installment in our ongoing Private Series: The AvRutick Collection. This remarkable exhibition features works on paper\, wall hangings\, and stone sculptures spanning from the early 1960s to the mid-2000s. \nAlice and Julian AvRutick began their shared journey in Toronto after marrying in 1957. There\, they quickly developed a deep appreciation for Inuit art\, eagerly acquiring prints and sculptures. Even after relocating to New York in the early 1960s\, their passion for Inuit art never waivered\, and they continued to expand their collection during regular visits to family in Montreal and Ottawa. Their family fondly remembers Alice and Julian returning from these trips and proudly revealing their latest acquisitions.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Itee Pootoogook - Stills
DESCRIPTION:Drawings by Itee Pootoogook (1951–2014)\, an acclaimed artist from Kinngait\, are easily recognized. His meticulous renderings of his world – the land\, the buildings and the many figures and scenes that shaped his community are unique; subtly coloured and almost dream-like in their serenity. These 13 early works showcase Pootoogook’s interest in capturing community life as he saw and experienced it. Drawing from his own photographs\, those taken by others\, and even magazine images\, Pootoogook’s portraits sensitively capture the spirit of a particular place and time.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Sharky Nuna
DESCRIPTION:Sharky Nuna (1918-1979) was a renowned sculptor whose unique sculptural vision distinguished him from his contemporaries. His timeless compositions of animals engaging in play\, preening\, and at rest display not only his technical skill\, but his artistic vision which is startling in its contemporary forms. Emerging in the 1960s with a distinct and fully developed style\, Nuna’s sleek and stylized works showcase his focus on overall composition rather than intricate details. His legacy endures as an artist whose minimalist work is profoundly modern\, embodying contemporary elegance ahead of his time. We are honoured to showcase this diverse and rare collection of his works.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: The Private Series – The Zeldin Collection
DESCRIPTION:In collaboration with Paul Petro Contemporary Art\, Feheley Fine Arts is excited to announce the Zeldin Collection as part of our ongoing Private Series. \nDr. John and Sheila Zeldin’s passion for art led them to begin collecting contemporary Inuit works in the early 1970s. Their fascination with Inuit sculpture took them to the west coast of Hudson’s Bay in the Kivalliq Region. Their personal tastes are reflected in their collection\, favouring works from Qammani’tuaq (Baker Lake)\, Arviat\, and Rankin Inlet. This diverse collection of sculptures features works by John Pangnark\, Lucy Tasseor Tutsweetok\, Barnabus Arnasungaaq\, as well as prints by Kenojuak Ashevak and Pauta Saila among others.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Aoudla Pudlat's Birds
DESCRIPTION:Aoudla Pudlat (1951-2006)\, was a prolific and skilled printmaker and illustrator from Kinngait\, who started his artistic journey in the 1970s. After apprenticing at Kinngait Studios\, Pudlat made his debut in the Cape Dorset Annual Print Collection in 1980. His innovative approach was evident in the contrast between his highly stylized drawings and photorealistic renderings. These drawings of birds highlighted not only his meticulous attention to detail but also his talent for experimenting with composition and framing. Throughout his artistic career\, Pudlat consistently defied expectations\, both at the time of his releases in the 1980s and continuing to do so over 30 years later.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Annie Taipanak
DESCRIPTION:Feheley Fine Arts is excited to announce our upcoming exhibition\, featuring a collection of eight wall hangings by Annie Taipanak. \nAnnie Taipanak (b. 1931) is an Inuk artist originally from Garry Lake\, NU. Her family  relocated to Qamani’tuaq (Baker Lake) where\, since the early 1960s\, the Inuit women artists had repurposed their traditional sewing skills to create a new form of cultural expression; textile works\, commonly known as wall-hangings. Using wool cloth\, felt\, and cotton embroidery thread\, they transformed these simple materials into deeply personal works filled with images of the land\, traditional stories or fanciful personal iconography.  In the early 1980s when the creation of wall-hangings was undergoing a major revival\, Taipanik joined this renowned group of female textile artists.  As the elders have passed on\, Taipanik is one of the few master textile artists from Qamani’taq who carry on their tradition. Her wall-hangings abound with colourful images celebrating the land and the animals and birds who shared it with the Inuit.  Her intricate\, masterful stitching over the duffel and felt applique forms unify and enliven these wonderful compositions.

SUMMARY:Exhibition: Ohotaq Mikkigak
DESCRIPTION:Feheley Fine Arts is excited to announce the upcoming solo exhibition of Ohotaq Mikkigak\, opening June 1st. \nOhotaq Mikkigak (1936-2014) began his artistic journey during the early stages of the co-op print program in Cape Dorset (Kinngait). While his debut print\, ‘Eskimo Fox Trapper’ emerged in 1961\, Mikkigak’s consistent engagement with drawing began upon his retirement as a caretaker at the Peter Pitseolak School in Kinngait in 1999. \nThroughout his career\, Mikkigak embraced evolution and experimentation\, particularly evident in his exploration of colour and scale. Nearing the end of his life\, he began to delve into a more abstract approach\, notably showcased in his large-scale drawings\, a departure from his earlier\, smaller-scale works. Within this expanded canvas\, Mikkigak’s art transformed into a contemporary style\, portraying landscapes\, seascapes\, and buildings in his community infused with his own distinct style. His vivid creations undeniably cement his status as one of today’s most dynamic and influential contemporary Inuit artists. \nPlease join us on Saturday\, June 1st\, at Feheley Fine Arts as we celebrate the groundbreaking works of Ohotaq Mikkigak.

Featuring contributions by Shuvinai Ashoona\, Ningiukulu Teevee\, Saimaiyu Akesuk\, Padloo Samayualie\, Johnny Pootoogook\, Ooloosie Saila\, and many others.
