The Private Series
Zeldin Collection

October 19 – November 9, 2024

Feheley Fine Arts, in collaboration with Paul Petro Contemporary Art, present The Zeldin Collection, as part of The Private Series.

“Dr. John and Sheila Zeldin had a common passion for art and had been collecting contemporary art since early in their marriage.  In the summer of 1972, John was invited to join his good friend Seymour Seligman on an expedition to Baker Lake in Nunavut.  Seymour was a collector of Inuit art and knew the artists and communities quite well.  John and Sheila were intrigued by the Seligman’s collection and were interested in starting one of their own.

Their children remember John coming back from the adventure with big crates and many stone carvings.  One in particular contained a large sculpture carved out of a whale’s vertebrae.  Over time, the Zeldins added works to the collection and expanded their Toronto gallery visits to include Av Isaacs’ Innuit Gallery on Prince Arthur.   At home the Inuit works were displayed together in the family room.

As I assisted Karen, Susan and Eric with their father’s estate last year, I remarked about how the overall collection presented as a reflection of their parents’ relationship. The decision was made to share their passion for collecting by gathering together the Inuit side of their collection one more time in an exhibition at Feheley Fine Arts.  Pat Feheley had a chance to see the works installed at Dr Zeldin’s home and gained a sense of how he and Sheila lived with art.”
