Kinngait Memories – John Hartman in Cape Dorset

On November 18th we opened our latest show, Kinngait Memories – John Hartman in Cape Dorset, a unique collaboration with Nicholas Metivier Gallery. Hartman, who was present, gave a talk about his experience working in Cape Dorset, to help elucidate some of the themes and ideas found in this show.

The exhibition examines the work created by Hartman while he resided in Cape Dorset between 1989 – 1992. Abstract renderings of Hartman’s experience are made in lithograph, watercolor, pastel, pencil, and ink. A number of drawings done in ink and coloured pencil by Inuit artists working in Cape Dorset during those years contextualize the work of Hartman by showing the artistic influences at play.

By also including several contemporary works by Shuvinai Ashoona, Qavavau Manumie, and Jutai Toonoo, Kinngait Memories – John Hartman in Cape Dorset, shows how art produced in the north has evolved from a plethora of influences from the 80’s to present.

Kinngait Memories – John Hartman in Cape Dorset, closes on December 16th.
